Heber Stuff

Hi everyone,
I thought I'd get the Heber planning underway.  It sounds like this year a few of us won't be able to be there the whole time, so I've made a little chart so that we know who is going to be there and when (click to enlarge).  If any of this info is wrong just let me know and I'll update it.

As for activities, I'm sure lots of you have ideas.  Last year I got really tired if we did big outings right after another, so I thought it might be a good idea to do big outings alternately with "days off" or low-key days.  So one day on, one day off, one day on, one day off.  Does that sound like an okay idea?

Deer Creek State Park is in Heber, and it has a big reservoir that people can boat and jet ski on.  I read online that there are businesses that do watercraft rentals at Deer Creek State Park, so is that something you guys would like, too?  The boat was fun last year, but I've kind of been dying to rent a couple of jet skis for a day and have people take turns on them - do we think that the kids are still too young for jet ski rentals?  If so, then that's fine.  I just thought I'd throw some ideas out there (although I've already reserved a State Parks Pass from my library for that week - just in case!).  There are also hiking trails through Deer Creek SP, and Wasatch Mountain State Park is nearby in Midway.  What other ideas did you guys have for activities?

One thing that I'd like to host myself is another karaoke night.  I thought that was really fun last year.  I'm not sure if the kids wanted to a magic show/comedy night since they didn't get to do it last year, too.  We should probably do those on the "off" days, since last year we were all so pooped after days in the national parks we couldn't gear up for a family night.  Does anyone else have any other ideas for nighttime entertainment?

Also: food.  Do you like how we did food last year?  Everyone brought up their own breakfast/lunch items and then each of the girls took a night for dinner.  I remember there was a little problem with mealtimes - sometimes not everyone was back when dinner was ready.  I don't mind that too much, maybe we could just make things we can keep warm in a crock pot for people to eat when they're ready?

So here are the questions summed up:
1. Do I need to change the schedule (above) of when you'll be in Heber?
2. Do you have ideas for activities already?  Do you like mine?
3. Do we want to do family dinners, and if so, what night do you want, and what do you think you might make?

Wow! Good job Breanne! I like your activity ideas. I have a friend who grew up in Heber and knows some good, kid friendly hikes. Also, I just don't want to do dinner on my birthday, other than that I'm flexible! =) I think Kimball might go into work on Tuesday and possibly one other day.

I would suggest that we do "big activity days" on Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday, but if we are taking a family photo Sunday afternoon, that might not work, because I think we'd all be pretty tired (and some of us might not be photo friendly). So we could do "big activity days" on Monday/Wednesday, which might be better anyway. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I'm already thinking about making beans and franks (and maybe baked potatoes), and calling Monday or Tuesday night.

Impressive! Don and I will be departing SLC around 11:00 a.m. Thursday. We want to take everyone out to dinner one night. I like the alternate activity days idea. It worked well in past years. Cheers.

Breanne, I think you've done a great job. I think Dad said something about treating for dinner one night, too. So, if we all do our own Saturday night, eat out twice, then that only leaves 3 nights left. Perhaps we could double up and not have the dinner be such a big job. With one sibling doing side and dessert and another doing the main dish. Something to think about. As far as activities, I thought about the Heber Creeper. It's a little expensive, but could be so much fun. They have four rides during the week we are there. Two are probably out of the price range--they include a train ride with a guided horseback ride and lunch, or a train ride with a guided raft tour down the Provo river and then a train ride back. Then there's a 3 hour ride (maybe two long for little kids) and there's a 90 minute ride through Soldier Hollow that I think would be great. It's $24 for adults and $16 for kids 2 and up. Would anyone else be up for that?

There are a couple things my friend suggested as well. One was the hotpots at Homestead resort. Another was a nice hike about an hour away, another was Cascade Springs--really easy walk. He also said the rec center there has nice basketball and tennis courts. And htat Midway has a nice mainstreet to walk down with fun shops. Some nice ideas for easy days.

I searched the Heber City calendar. On Saturday, the 25th (the day we get there) there is the 2nd annual llama fun day--we've got to hit that! And then on Saturday nights there is a free concert on the lawn in front of the Homestead Resort at 7:00. A BBQ dinner is served from 6-8 for a price of $8-$12/person. That sounds like fun to me. Grab a dinner and sit on the lawn for a concert. I went to the Homestead's web page (looks like an awesome place) and saw that they advertised a crater filled with a natural warm mineral spring that is open to the public for swimming, snorkling, or scuba. It sounds amazing. They also have tours of this naturally hollowed out crater. Could be fun for another day. And then on Thursday's they have a farmer's market and concert in the park from 3:00-8:00. What do you think?

P.S. I love the jet-skiing idea at Deer Creek one day. We did that with Dad once. I was 8 months pregnant with Matti at the time. So it was just about 14 years ago!!! (I don't think I got on the jet skis that day.) But I do remember that Nikki brought Mark Hacking (the MURDERER) as her date, and that he bugged Ryan because he claimed he had stayed up the whole night before reading a 1000 page book (and completed it). Anyone else remember that outing? Breanne, that means you would have been 14 at the time. Is it just me, or have there been a lot of crazy changes in the last 14 years?
